SAFETY OF MISSIONARIES

Elder Pippin/Smith - Bushwick 1 - Oct 29, 1995 - "EGGS and BOTTLES THROWN - FALL AT OUR FEET - We've had eggs and bottles thrown at us. The spirit around us has kept us safe! One night. I saw an egg thrown directly at us. At the last moment, it fell down and hit the road in front of us. I've seen bottles do the very same thing. As we pray for protection, and exercise faith that we literally have a shield around us at times, the Lord confirms that to us.

Elder Avena/Christensen - Dyker Heights 1 Sp - "BIKE HIT BY CAR - PROTECTED - We were on our way to an appointment on our bikes. It was dark, but we were on a well lit street. A GMC Jimmy pulled out of a smaller street and hit me. When I hit the brakes, my bike slid sideways so the vehicle hit me broadside on my left side. I was first thrown onto the car, then when the driver hit the brakes, I was tossed onto the pavement. Now my left side hurt because of the car, and my right side because of the pavement. The driver was a very nice lady with 3 children all over the age of 8, so I fearlessed her and told her I'd be sending the missionaries over. I'm still a bit sore. My knees and ankles hurt, as well as my wrists and elbows, but I was protected because I don't even have a bruise where my garments cover my body. I actually thought my time had come. I was not frightened as it was happening, only annoyed because I was going to be late for an appointment. The lady wanted to take me to the hospital, but I wouldn't go because nothing was broken. I know the Lord is watchful over us. I know he protected me. I had a helmet on and was obeying the traffic rules, so I was in the right to be protected. Obedience does "pay dividends!"

Elder Washburn/Pearson - Brentwood Sp - Mar 17, 1996 - "OTHER MISSIONARIES IN NEED - My companion and I were driving to an investigator’s house. We decided to not go in the house and were impressed to turn around, leave and look up another referral. As we were turning down a particular road, we saw Elder Harr and Jeppson beside their car with their emergency lights flashing. They had left the highway to look for gas, and ran out 2 miles from a gas station. They had only been there for one minute before we arrived. We got them on their way. The Lord sure does care for we missionaries. NOTE: Elder Harr said that they had hit a pot hole that triggered the gas cutout to stop the flow. Elder Washburn was one of the very few missionaries who knew what the problem was, and where to turn on the switch in the rear."

Elder Mendenhall/Jeppsen - Brentwood Sp - Dec 12, 1995 - "VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE - I was trying to turn right onto a busy street. I tried to pull out in front of a line of cars. The first car was going very fast, although I didn't realize it. As I pushed on the gas, the car quickly died, before I could get on the road. That is the first time that a car has ever done that on me. I think the Lord killed the engine on purpose to protect each of us from having a wreck. He really does protect us, especially as we are all praying as a mission for "no accidents during the winter months of December through March. We felt those prayers on our behalf."

Elder Shae Johnson/Pierce - Midwood 11 Sp - Aug 20, 1995 - "GUNS FIRING - The area is about the same. There is always something different around the corner. To update, on Friday night, we almost got caught in a gunfight. We were only about 10 seconds away on bikes. We quickly stopped and hid. We weren't hurt, so we continued the work as usual. This is just a little of the spice of Brownsville. We know that the Lord protects his obedient and hard working missionaries."

Elder Pierce/Shae Johnson - Midwood 11 Sp - Aug 20, 1995 - "GUNS - We were only about 50 yards away from the shooting and watched it happen. We were waiting on our bikes at the lights on Saratoga and Dean. We then heard the shooting straight ahead as they were shooting into the bed of a truck. We got behind a parked van and waited. There were at least a dozen shots from 2 guns. I was behind the van as 2 teenagers, one packing a gun in his hand, ran right past me. The other ran past Elder Johnson in the street. Elder Johnson then called 911 and I directed the first Police car where to go. One man in the truck was shot in the side."

Elder Snider/Turley - Flushing Korean - Aug 20, 1995 - "BIKES - CAR OPENED DOOR WHILST PASSING - We were riding home and we were late. We were "pumping" our bikes hard. Then all of a sudden, a car opened it's door in front of me and BAM! I went down on the ground with my bike and millions of thoughts went through my mind in that split second including a quick prayer in my mind. Elder Turley who was right behind me, came down on top of me. We couldn't believe it. We both were not even scratched. Our bikes are not rideable, but both of us are fine. We were wearing our helmets. The Lord protected us, because we were being obedient and working hard. I have thanked the Lord many times already and will many times again. It was a miracle!"

Elder Ken Anderson/Hoggan - Plainview - Aug 20, 1995 - "NO FEAR - Elder Hoggan shared with me 2 Tim. "For God hath not given the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." I feel that it reflects upon the "No Fear" principle of this mission. God is with us and on our side and if there comes a situation where we may be scared, if we have been obedient, we should have faith and have "No Fear". We are God's servants and he will care for us after strict obedience."

Elder Pierce/Shae Johnson - Midwood 11 Sp - July 30, 1995 - "ANGELS WATCHING OVER US - My testimony that the Lord protects His servants, grows stronger everyday. I hear the gunshots and see the ambulances and police cars all the time. Even where people try to cause trouble. I know there are angels protecting us."

Elder Ping/Christensen - Feb 12, 1995 - "MUGGED, BUT PROTECTED - We got mugged. They weren't very good at it though. After trying a "fearless", which didn't work, I surrended the $1, I happened to be carrying, while my companion offered his mugger, an apple, he happened to be carrying. Then it dawned on them that we were religious people, and they let us loose. The spiritual experience that I had, was that I felt calm and peaceful, the whole time, and had the assurance that I would not be harmed. We later found out from other victims, that our muggers were armed with a gun. I know the Lord protects His missionaries, when they are worthy and obedient."

Elder Mavy/Nicklaus - DL - Uniondale 11 Sp - Oct 3, 1994 - "NO FEAR - BIKE ACCIDENT AND BIKE THIEVES - A car knocked my bike out from under me. Both myself and the bike were OK. Then about 30 minutes later, I was held up by a couple of teenagers with a knife, who wanted my bike. I started asking them "find out" questions and they eventually gave up saying "You ask too many questions!" and lost interest. I never once felt afraid for myself or for losing the bike, which I had no intention of ever giving over. I felt that the Lord protects us when we are obedient and hard working."

Elder Ben Davis/Ward - DL - Jamaica 11 Sp - Aug 22, 1994 - "THIEF ARRESTED - 3 OTHER COMPANIONSHIPS BROUGHT FOR SECURITY - This week has been a little tough with the arresting of the man who robbed our apartment some time ago. In our area we rarely see other missionaries, maybe one other companionship every 2 weeks. On Wednesday when I saw the perpetrator on the street and called the Police, they came within about 3 minutes and made the arrest, but about 30 seconds before, 3 companionships "happened" to show up in the same 200 ft area at the same time. It was as if the Lord had sent 8 of His missionaries to the same place at the same time in case something happened to any one of us. This has taught me that this truly is the Lord's work and he is in control of it, whilst ever we remain obedient. It is such a blessing and an honor to have this sacred calling and commission."
